“I am positive that basketballs run through my son’s veins and not blood”. From the age of six years old Kelvin better known as “KB” was going to fall in love with Basketball. Having grown early, he was discovered by the local Physical Ed. Teacher and from there his journey took flight. Starting as sophomore at Daniel Murphy High School gave him early exposure to the College scene. He was selected to the High School All-America team in 1978 and also picked as one of top 10 players in Southern California. He finished his High School career with 24 points, 11 rebounds and also dishing out 4 assist per game over his three years playing Varsity basketball.
He chose to continue his education and basketball at the University of Santa
Clara, where he was given a full four year scholarship. He had memorable games against cross town rivals University of San Francisco and St. Mary’s College (Patrick Mills) putting up double double stats. During his four years at Santa Clara he had the challenge of going up against well known players as Mark Aguirre, Bill Cartwright and the one and only Michael Jordan! Kelvin still is on the Santa Clara career stat list as having a career field goal percentage of 54%. Graduating in 1983 with a Degree in Communications, he played in the inaugural Sacramento Kings Summer League. He averaged 10 points a game a 5 rebounds per game before breaking his ankle ending his summer season. After rehabbing the ankle KB made the decision to continue his career overseas and was fortunate to get an opportunity to come down under to Melbourne Australia. His first stop was in Traralgon Victoria where he played for the Gippsland Lakers for two seasons averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds per game. After his two year stint with Gippsland Kelvin played for Bulleen, Craigieburn and Wonthaggi. At Wonthaggi he enjoyed his greatest success averaging 25 points and 15 rebounds per game and leading the team to the Grand Final where they lost by 3 points.
After that season this is when KB decided to become a player coach for the Sunbury Jets. This by far was his biggest challenge as Sunbury was considered a country team with no chance of ever winning. After having only a few wins to show for, in 1999 Sunbury reached their potential winning the Big V and also the MMBL Championship. His dedication saw him remain at Sunbury for 11 years as Head Coach and Junior Boy’s co-ordinator and made several more appearances in finals basketball.
Currently Kelvin is the Under 16’s Coaching Co-ordinator at Sandringham looking after six teams and also coaching the 16-2 side. He also is Assistant Coach for senior team who now compete in the SEABL competition. He also gives his time to Scotch College as Coach for their year 9 team for season 2009. In season 2010 we will see Kelvin help start the Men’s Basketball program at Warrandyte Basketball Association. Having already produced a fine Women’s program, Warrandyte hope KB can produce the same magic and bring home a Championship in the very near future!
His involvement with Junior Basketball provides him with great insight to Australian Junior talent which will give Colleges Coach’s an edge on getting the best talent available. No one will work harder than KB assisting young players reach their goals both on and off the court. KB’s experience and passion for the game and his dedication to providing an environment for young players to excel, will add value to Aussie Sports America’s mission and that is to provide an honest and reliable service to the collegiate sporting community.
